Creating Wentworth Point's Town Centre: A Benchmark in Density
This article is the final of a 4 part series. Previously we introduced the Wentworth Point Marinas's Urban Design, Bennelong Bridge and Architecture & Place.
The Client Says
John Kinsella, owner of Billbergia and whose companies have developed, constructed and marketed the project, says, “the big thing at Wentworth Point is the architecture. The project is cutting edge and will be a benchmark for ‘density done well’. Some government agencies have been slow to accept some of the concepts such as the height of buildings and the elevated topography but, even now, with much of the social amenities yet to come, such as the parkland, a social club and the marina, it feels really great.”
The project is cutting edge
John notes, “you see people on the streets all the time, including lots of kids now that the school is open, and this is telling us the place is working. You also see lots of movement along the bridge between the two communities, a lot of it just recreational promenading. Influx of strangers makes both Rhodes and Wentworth Point tick.”
Feel the Streets
Scott Carver has hoped that 15 years of work on the Wentworth Point town centre would prove that connected urban density could be a positive way of living in a predominantly suburban city. Whereas most projects require the respect or enhancement of existing built context, Wentworth Point demanded the creation of meaning from entirely new architecture in the absence of any built context.
Although there is more to be built in the town centre the project is at a stage where the important ingredients of social performance are in place and one can look beyond the buildings as objects and can feel the streets. Wentworth Point is our little city, a new place in Sydney and an affirmation of the benefits of compact, connected living.
