Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort
Enhancing the landscape of a beloved holiday destination
Challenge
The Sheraton Mirage at Port Douglas is one of Australia’s leading resorts, and is the source of many treasured holiday memories. With a new owner on board, we were asked to update the resort’s landscaping. Our brief was to preserve the resort’s history within a rejuvenated contemporary environment.

Insight
Much of the design decision making was driven by considering ongoing maintenance and new technologies in water management. Scott Carver put in place a recycled water strategy to replace the potable mains water that had been used fir ground irrigation, saving the resort thousands of dollars annually in water costs. The design upgrades create an indoor-outdoor opportunity for leisure and business tourism. The local Port Douglas community has benefited significantly, as well as the local economy.
Solution
Mirage guests spend 70 per cent of their time outdoors, so we aimed to create a 5-star outdoor experience. Overgrown plantings were cleared to create open space for new lawns and shade trees. Innovative water management technology was introduced and pools and lagoons were updated with new cabanas and swim-up balconies.
“The refreshed outdoor spaces, including waterways, lagoon pools, swim-up balconies to lagoon-edge suites and the installation of more than 25 cabanas gives the resort a more contemporary feel,” Andrew Turnbull
