A mixed-use development with an ecological heart

Challenge

The important cultural and heritage features inherent in the historic Kirrawee Brick Pit & Kiln site meant great care and sensitivity was required in delivering the re-development. Central to this, is the significant community asset Brick Kiln Park comprised of a central informal sports field, district all-abilities playground and public plaza. The site is also home to critically endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest (STIF) vegetation and is therefore subject to strict protection regulations requiring significant ecological navigations.

The design was inspired by the original heritage and historical use of the site. The extensive use of industrial materials such as brick, timber and stone helps re-establish this connection. In addition to the revegetation of the native endemic STIF forest, as a whole, we want Kiln Park to be a place where the local community can come together and get a sense of the site's past, present and future.

Insight

Working with the community to develop quality solutions to deal with the heritage & cultural considerations of the site was paramount. Through the use of heritage-based materials and utilisation of recycled bricks from the site throughout the public domain, we were able to protect the site’s historical significance. Additionally, the Cockatoo Wing Pergola allowed us to represent the Indigenous history through interpretation of the word Kirrawee which, is understood to mean “Place of White Cockatoos”

Solution

Our collaborative approach to working with council ensured the delivery of a high quality community asset designed to serve existing and future residents and visitors. The project was delivered under a voluntary planning agreement by the developer in close consultation with Sutherland Council.
