Batemans Bay Boatshed
A sculptural form embodying the stories of its place
Challenge
Building on or in a foreshore environment within any community will always be contentious. Our carefully considered design approach represented an opportunity to replace an out-of-date facility with a distinctive sculptural form, a form that embodied the stories of its place.
Insight
Out of grid and on lean, the boatshed belongs to the foreshore, the promenade, and the community, and not the commerce of the adjacent streetscape.
Solution
What made this proposal palatable to Council was the opportunity to replace the existing outdated facility with the creation of a distinctive sculptural form that embodied stories of the place. Built with marine-toughened materials, the building appears to extend the jetty onto the shore.
