Revitalising an iconic site for the community

Challenge

The old Balmain Leagues Club site at Rozelle, has a long, and plagued history, and left one of Sydney’s most iconic sites in desperate need of revitalisation.

Insight

Many previous design solutions for the site faced challenges from the community and neighbouring businesses.  In acquiring the site, our client engaged a new consultant team and charged Scott Carver with developing a scheme that response to the previous objections.

Solution

Scott Carver worked closely with Laurus Projects, the community and Inner West Council to submit a Development Application that provides a solution to issues of the past, and one that will breathe new life into the site. Emphasis has been placed on the return of the Balmain Leagues Club, high-quality urban design, with a particular focus on the creation of new public spaces, landscaping to enrich a sterile area, and activation of new laneways and spaces, to create a strong connection with retailers, and the community.

Design inspiration

Design inspiration

The project draws inspiration from the context of the site and its neighbourhood - from the lower form of the Victoria Road frontage, drawing inspiration from the balconies of Balmain pubs, to the simple palette of the town square, inspired by the hidden pockets and courtyards of Balmain - offering the community a respite from the bustle of Victoria Road. Built form is prioritised to Victoria Road, with buildings broken down into a trio of forms, with lower recessive linking elements to break down the street wall of the development.
