Avenue on George
A cafe that changes with the seasons
Challenge
The Avenue Group wanted a creative solution for their new cafe, located on Sydney’s prestigious George Street. The brief was for a cafe that could adapt with the seasons and the time of day, which could cater for functions and events.

Insight
Creating an adaptive and flexible cafe meant that the design had to respond to its context in order for it to feel authentic. Cues were taken from the geometric patterns of the adjacent substation and incorporated into a tessellated feature wall. A well balanced approach has been taken to the design, including elements such as the the adjacent sandstone lobby of 200 George speaking to the café's warm timber tones, which provide a golden hue when the sun falls upon them. A thoughtfully considered and well-crafted café for the urban dweller.
Solution
Our design incorporates loose, non-fixed furniture that can be moved according to the occasion. The open-style kitchen is suited to traditional kitchen operations and can double as a function/beverage serving station. A central structural column has been adopted as a changeable menu display site.
