Australian symbolism is expressed through the conceptual form design of the gum leaf shaped roof which hovers above the spectator seating. The colours chosen to be used in the building elements, along with the Aboriginal artwork featured in the design, reinforce its "Australianess".

The stadium was designed to hold 80,000 seats in Olympic mode and 60,000 seats post Olympic use. This was achieved through innovative design and engineering which allowed one whole grandstand to shift position. This ensured that the spectators amenity for the venues main lifetime use, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer was optimised.

SCOTT CARVER participated in this project as the lead design consultant, providing Architectural design advice, and also in the value engineering of the facility. Although the consortium was not successful with the bid, the design received high accolades from the bid committee and industry peers.
