The Aquatic Centre’s original design incorporated the provision for the expansion of spectacular seating should Australia ever hold an Olympic Games. In 1998 OCA sought the Australian Architect with the most relevant credentials to undertake this work, hence choose SCOTT CARVER for the job. Within the parameters of the concept for this extension, the design team delivered an additional 2500 premium seats to expand the capacity of this temporary venue to 17500. This also provided a significant financial windfall for the client at no cost. A major environmentally sustainable initiative in this project relates directly to the temporary nature of the venue. It was designed so that a 7000 seat portion of the extension was able to be relocated in totality to a new venue. With the remaining extension seamlessly integrating into the original complex. The striking form of this building became one of the iconic symbols during the Olympics.
