Architecture
A demolition and rebuild of existing housing stock is located in Lalor Park, in the city of Blacktown. The scheme comprises 11 new General Housing 1 and 2 bedroom dwellings.
The approach to the site has been to address the prominent corner and Northcott Road. The main drive connection is located to the southern end of the site on Kennedy Parade accessing a shared parking facility. This drive provides a wide southern side setback to the adjoining dwelling, allows for connection to a central pedestrian space and terminates with a significant tree being retained. Additional parking is provided to a carport to the northern end and eastern
The form of the buildings is intended to group small dwellings into clusters that appear as larger suburban homes, whilst providing individuality in terms of address point and street presence. Balconies to upper levels front the street and through changes in setback and alignment provide an articulation to the street. The roof profiles form an important aspect to the aesthetic style of the dwellings. The combination of gabled and hipped ends, plus dynamic skillion elements, provide a contemporary appearance to the roofs; whilst recognising that ultimately these dwellings need to be read in the context of traditional suburban streets, dominated by roof forms.
Materials vary across the site, with the predominant pallet being varied tones of face brick, typically to the lower level, with lightweight cladding to the upper storey. Again this helps the dwellings read as a series of larger ‘houses’ as opposed to a series of ground and first floor units. Front entries and individual address points are reinforced through more solid rendered elements.
