PNG - Serving the Community

Having graduate architects experience firsthand the effort of building from first principles, experiencing real people needs, communicating with them on how they may help, in solving practical problems, in finding buildable solutions with the available skills, materials and know how, is bound to leave an invaluable imprint for their future careers.

Sandy and Joanne, both Scott Carver employees, will be leaving for Papua New Guinea on the 5th of December, to undertake a five week design and construct community project in the remote villages of Laukanu and Kelkel as part of our giving to community program.

Their visit will have them addressing the underlying water and sanitation needs within the communities by focusing on clean water, adequate washing facilities and toilets.  A master plan will also be undertaken in order to address the future growth of the villages in relation to the above three projects.

This project is in support of the Sago Network and the UTS Masters of Architecture degree, which values a design approach that utilizes an exchange of knowledge between local and external parties.  It will therefore bring together the local community with visiting architects, engineers and students from UTS and PNG universities with the aim of delivering a collaborative based design response.

As the process continues, they will be regularly updating a project blog with news from the front.
