Sapphire Class : BIM 2010

By Rodney Paesler

We kept our first BIM server alive until the year 2000, when it was un-ceremonially dumped like the Cadillac it was – a glorious but ageing beast that had been driven harder than was ever expected.  Amazing to believe that hardware could last for as long as 15 years, such was its greatness.Only now, after 10 years on in the 21st century, do we see the power of desktop computing beginning to come close to the productivity and performance of our former mainframe server.

BIM technology is again becoming exciting for the building professions, because it is finally accessible to all: – building contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, architects and engineers.

As Architects, ten years ago on the mainframe, it was just too easy to re-document the engineers work for clash detection. Now, building products arrive on site directly from co-ordinated digital assets, engineered and manufactured with precision that makes site work a breeze.

Our customised application suite and methodology has now been completely re-written in the last 12 months to take full advantage of what we learnt in the early 90’s. Like all fashions, the 80’s BIM is new again! And we love it.
