Muddy fun

By Andrew Turnbull

Our collaborative approach to design leads us into uncharted waters. Our latest adventure involves the repurposing of the former “sculptures by the sea – Fiddlesticks Sculpture” into a floating art work set on a rural dam in the hinterland of Gerringong, NSW.

The project offered an opportunity for landscape architects to be engaged in the forward planning and implementation of the floating 350kg sculpture. It was a chance to relive childhood experience whereby “pick-up or fiddle sticks” became a live 3D application. The process was a test of patience, construction ingenuity and water sports.

As a young design professional, Amy Barnes probably did not anticipate that her role description would entail a hands-on construction experience of this type. A rare opportunity to collaborate with our clients, take of your shoes and engage with nature.

The “fiddle sticks” sculpture is the latest in a series of sculptures integrated into the dramatic rural | coastal context in which Scott Carver has been involved since 2004.
