Every Day Hero

By Nick Winberg

Well everyone it was hands down one of the most difficult things I've ever done.. Seriously dificult, and at times quite frightening...

But, I made it up there. I summited the highest peak outside the Himalayas. I could barely breathe, there was none of the anticipated joyous jumping or shouting, just a polite smile and a brief hyperventilation before settling in for a rest to let it all sink in. It finally has and it's a great feeling.

After three weeks trekking to high camp with varying weather and high winds on the way up, we weren't sure what to expect once we reached the real danger zone above 6000m. In the end I was blessed with a near perfect day to summit, a balmy -14C and sunny without too much wind (30km/hr). Given that two days prior it was forecast to be snowing with 80km/hr winds for summit day, I feel very lucky. With the newfound knowledge of what is required of the body and mind for a high peak summit day.. More difficult conditions may have just proved just that little too much...

So many thanks to everyone for your support and of course to those who donated. Together we've raised a nice little donation for Inala, a charitable organisation that is to build a new day care centre for intellectually disabled children and adults.

Standing at 6962m, Mt Aconcagua in Argentina is a little known mountain that soars high in the Andes as the greatest peak on the continent of South America, yet also has the honour of being the highest peak in the Western and Southern hemispheres, in fact the highest mountain outside the Himalayas.

It was great to have the office support right behind me. Cheers and see you all soon.
